The Quarterly

Art Underground Fall 09 Quarterly

The Quarterly was born in the home of Brad and Hannah Edwards.  Their apartment, in an old Catholic Elementary School called “Immaculate Conception,” had high ceilings and lots of bare wall space that struck them as strikingly similar to a blank canvas.  While not artists themselves, a good number of their friends were.  They told several of them to hang their work in their home during an open party, and if anything sold, they wouldn’t charge a commission.  The idea caught on…

The first “Wine and Art” party attracted a few dozen friends… the second brought in 50 people, mostly strangers.  After almost 75 people came through their 1,000 square foot apartment during their third party, they realized this idea had grown out of control.  Thus the Quarterly was born.

The Quarterly is now a regular gallery exhibition in the homes and businesses of a St. Louis City.  The combination of a gallery’s professional approach and home’s warm social atmosphere make for an incredibly unique evening of refreshments, relationships and really good art. While we initially disliked being forced to use alternative spaces to show art it has been wildly successful!  It is creating new audiences made up of people who might not feel at home in a polished gallery, but are enthusiastic about checking out unique architecture, exciting new creative businesses and their neighbors’ comfortable homes.  Come check out some of the best of St. Louis’s creative culture!
